Tyler DeWitt, Renowned Science Expert and YouTube Phenomenon, Joins Net Texts
NEW YORK, Sept. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Net Texts, a leader in educational technology, welcomes science educator Tyler DeWitt, PhD, as Director of Content Development. Dr. DeWitt will lead Net Texts' development of new open educational resources (OER), which can replace textbooks in core content areas or serve as a foundation on which teachers can build using their own curricular material. Dr. DeWitt came to national attention when he created Science with Tyler DeWitt, which has become one of YouTube's top educational channels. He is a frequent speaker on education technology and science pedagogy whose TED talk has been viewed almost 1 million times.
Dr. DeWitt will be responsible for creating new content for the Net Texts platform, which offers free, high-quality OER that let teachers publish lessons directly to students' computers, iPads, Android tablets and, soon, the other most frequently used personal electronic devices.
Dr. DeWitt comes to Net Texts after earning a PhD in microbiology from MIT. While pursuing his degree, he oversaw content development for MIT+K12, a program through which MIT students transform complex scientific research into fun, accessible videos that show younger students how exciting science can be. Dr. DeWitt also taught students in the university's MITES (Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science) summer high school program and served as a graduate resident tutor.
Dr. DeWitt first became interested in using technology as a pedagogical tool while teaching high school biology, chemistry and English in the United States and South Korea. He developed his popular series of YouTube tutorials after seeing how ineffective traditional textbooks were as learning tools.
Net Texts is working to make learning more accessible by eliminating traditional textbooks and replacing them with progressive educational material, ultimately revolutionizing the way students learn. The company has already created over 1,000 ready-to-use courses which can serve as complete e-textbooks or as a foundation on which teachers can build using their own curricular materials. The courses, which use open educational resources (OER), i.e. freely accessible, openly licensed documents and media, provide easy-to-implement content solutions for 1:1 computing programs, blended learning environments, flipped classrooms, and traditional classrooms looking to infuse more technology into core content areas.
