Tycoon Ambani Is The Wealthiest Indian Cricket Team Owner
SINGAPORE, April 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- With the 2014 Indian Premier League (IPL) season in full swing, Wealth-X revealed today that business tycoon Mukesh Ambani is the wealthiest Indian cricket team owner with an estimated net worth of US$21.2 billion, almost 10 times the personal fortune of media baron Kalanidhi Maran, who is in second spot with US$2.2 billion.
Collectively, the eight ultra high net worth (UHNW) individuals on the Wealth-X list – which includes Bollywood actress Preity Zinta who co-owns Kings XI Punjab – control US$25.17 billion of the US$935 billion wealth in India.
To compile the list, Wealth-X selected the most prominent and significant shareholder from each of the eight teams competing in the IPL for the 2014 season.
Ambani is the chairman, managing director and the largest shareholder of Reliance Industries, a Fortune Global 500 company that deals mainly in refining, petrochemicals, and in the oil and gas sectors. Through Reliance, Ambani owns the Mumbai Indians, the defending IPL champions that defeated Narayanaswami Srinivasan's Chennai Super Kings in the 2013 finals.
The 2014 IPL season began on 16 April and runs until 1 June. There are eight teams vying for the trophy this season, one fewer than 2013 after the withdrawal of the Pune Warriors India.
