CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- TYASA, www.tyasa.com, a Mexican steelmaker, has placed equipment orders and begun construction of a Castrip® facility at its Ixtaczoquitlan site. As one of North America's fastest growing steelmakers, TYASA will leverage the efficiencies and excess melt capacity of its Quantum Furnace to supply the Castrip thin-strip casting process. The new facility will have the capability to produce 500,000 tons of thin-gauge, high-strength, sheet steel to supply the local manufacturing and construction markets. TYASA's domestic production of high-quality sheet steel will allow TYASA to better serve its current customers and grow its business with a more diversified product offering to a broader cross-section of the Mexican market. Start-up of the caster is expected to be in early 2017.
TYASA will be the first licensee outside of Nucor to build a Castrip mill. Nucor owns and operates thin-strip casting facilities in Crawfordsville, IN and Blytheville, AR.
"We are very pleased to welcome TYASA to the Castrip family of licensees. TYASA has a long history of adapting new technologies to feed its entrepreneurial spirit and fuel its growth. Their proven track record of commercial and technical excellence gives us great confidence that TYASA is the right partner to help exploit and expand the Castrip UCS (Ultra-thin Cast Strip) markets," said Frank Fisher, President of Castrip LLC.
The process equipment and technical services for the new facility will be supplied through a consortium comprised of Siemens, IHI and Castrip LLC. IHI and Siemens are licensed exclusively by Castrip LLC to provide core equipment for Castrip facilities.
The new twin roll casting and rolling plant will produce UCS coils up to 1,680mm wide, with gauge ranging between 0.8mm – 1.8mm.
