Two Provost Umphrey Law Firm Cases Selected to The National Law Journal's Top 100 Verdicts 2012 List
BEAUMONT, Texas, April 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Law Journal recently announced two of Provost Umphrey's verdicts in 2012 were listed in the top 100 verdicts in the nation. A fraud case, JJJJ Walker LLC v. First National Bank, is ranked as the 24th largest verdict in the country, and a products liability case, McWilliams v. Chevron USA Inc., is ranked as the 100th largest verdict in the country.
In this annual special report, The National Law Journal looks at the 100 highest jury verdicts of the previous year, as reported by affiliate VerdictSearch based on its surveys of the nation's courts, reports from attorneys and reporting by ALM Media LLC publications to compile the list.
November 26, 2012, 281st State District Court Judge Sylvia Matthews entered a judgment in the amount of $65,884,838.70 against First National Bank of Edinburg and the Merensky Reef Hospital Corporation (Cause #2010-41034) in favor of six investors that claimed they were defrauded by the financial institution and healthcare management company (original verdict announcement was for $118 million). Judge Matthews' decision follows the conclusion of a five week jury trial that culminated in a unanimous verdict against First National Bank Edinburg, Merensky Reef Hospital Corporation and Conroe area attorney Eric Yollick wherein the jury found these Defendants committed fraud when they wrongfully conspired to take possession of three hospitals purchased by the investor Plaintiffs.

On February 10, a plaintiff received a $17,498,391.87 verdict in his benzene suit against Chevron USA, Inc., Texaco, Inc. and Unocal. The plaintiff was a former petroleum inspector and suffered extensive Benzene exposure in his work on ships and barges in Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas. The trial, which lasted one week, took place in Calcasieu Parish, LA.
