Two NJCU Students Receive Prestigious Fulbright Grants
JERSEY CITY, N.J., March 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Two New Jersey City University students have been awarded Fulbright U.S. Student Awards to teach abroad in 2015-2016.
Claudia Severino '11 of Jersey City, a graduate student in multicultural education, will serve as a U.S. cultural ambassador in Colombia, where she will teach English to undergraduate students and work with the organization, Sisma Mujer, to raise awareness about violence against women.
Currently a language arts teacher in Paterson Public Schools, Ms. Severino holds a bachelor's degree in English and secondary education certification from NJCU.
Jacqueline DaSilva of Kearny, a senior majoring in English with a dual certification in elementary education and special education, will serve as a U.S. cultural ambassador in Brazil, where she will teach English and conduct English language workshops for special needs students.
Established by the United States Congress in 1946, the Fulbright Program is the largest international exchange program in the country, offering opportunities for students, teachers, scholars, and professionals to study, teach, lecture, and conduct research in more than 155 countries worldwide.
Sponsored by the United States Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the prestigious and highly-competitive program has provided almost 300,000 participants, selected on the basis of academic merit and leadership potential, with these exchange opportunities.
Dr. Irma Maini, an NJCU professor of English, is the Fulbright Program advisor at the University.
