Two Eco-Friendly New York Hotels To Celebrate Earth Day 2016 By Changing Manhattan Skyline - Again
Residence Inn and Courtyard New York Manhattan/Central Park to debut light show titled 'The Earth'
NEW YORK, April 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Residence Inn New York Manhattan/Central Park and Courtyard New York Manhattan/Central Park will debut a light show titled "The Earth" on the building's crown on the evening of April 22, 2016.
The show, at 700 feet above the corner of Broadway and 54th Street in the heart of NYC, will feature a digital rendering of the continents rotating around the top section of America's tallest hotel-only building in celebration of Earth Day 2016. The building's crown is visible from many vantage points in the NYC metro area, including Central Park, Times Square and New Jersey.
Currently showing "The Skies," — infrared satellite imagery of actual weather patterns digitized into gently evolving motions — the NYC building housing the eco-friendly hotels utilizes energy-efficient LED lights to display moving images in hues of blue.
Brett Andersen of Focus Lighting, the design agency that put together the show and system, said: "'The Skies' was inspired by the effects of global warming on our climate and weather. We are thinking of 'The Skies' as the first in a trilogy, followed by 'The Stars' and 'The Seas.'"
The Architects Newspaper recently recognized the project as the winner of the Design Award in the architectural lighting category.
"Our team is passionate about utilizing and celebrating sustainable and green practices locally and globally," said Tim McGlinchey, the green hotels' general manager. "Showing 'The Earth' on Earth Day is a fitting way to celebrate our environmental commitments and those of our fellow New Yorkers while participating in the worldwide celebration and recognition of this event."
McGlinchey said the hotels would showcase this unique feature in the NYC skyline during New York City's 4th of July celebration and use the display to welcome visitors from around the world as they come to compete in the NYC Marathon in November.
