OAKLAND, Calif., July 21, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Twenty Kaiser Permanente hospitals are among the nation's elite specialty care providers, according to the U.S. News & World Reports' 2015-16 Best Hospitals for Specialty Care rankings, published this week.
The annual rankings, considered to provide an objective guide to excellence in complex hospital care, are based on the evaluation of the nearly 5,000 medical centers nationwide. This year's rankings include the top 15 U.S. hospitals overall and the top 50 according to their performance in 16 key medical specialties. Now in its 26th year, the report also analyzes and rates facilities in most states and in major metropolitan regions (all U.S. regions with at least 500,000 in population).
Four Kaiser Permanente hospitals – Los Angeles, Downey, Sacramento and San Francisco – are among the nation's top 50 (99th percentile) for four specialties: diabetes and endocrinology, cardiology and heart surgery, geriatrics and gynecology. Another 16 Kaiser Permanente hospitals are ranked among the top 50 in their state overall.
"Kaiser Permanente's commitment to world-class quality care is supported by this latest report from U.S. News & World Report," said Patrick Courneya, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer for Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and Kaiser Foundation Health Plan. "This recognition of our specialty care is directly attributable to Kaiser Permanente's culture of continuous improvement, evidence-based practices and personalized service."
In all, Kaiser Permanente facilities are rated "high performing" in 12 different specialties.
"We're gratified to hear the latest report from U.S. News & World Report places us within the top tier of hospitals nationwide," said Amy Compton-Phillips, MD, chief quality officer, The Permanente Federation, the national umbrella organization for nearly 18,000 physicians who provide care to Kaiser Permanente's more than 10 million members. "Our tens of thousands of dedicated physicians, nurses, clinicians and care teams strive to put our patients at the center of everything we do, and these results validate that our quality care is working."
Hospitals in the U.S. News & World Report survey are ranked according to reputation, mortality, patient safety and other areas, including nurse staffing, technology and volume thresholds. Kaiser Permanente improves care outcomes by assembling specialized teams at regional centers of excellence for specialty care, such as cardiac surgery, neurology and oncology. In directing specialty cases to these centers, not all Kaiser Permanente hospitals meet the U.S. News & World Report volume thresholds.

The Best Hospitals for Specialty Care recognition follows the recent release of the U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals for Common Care. In that study, 22 Kaiser Permanente hospitals were rated "high-performing" for at least one of five routine care procedures: heart bypass, hip replacement, knee replacement, congestive heart failure, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
