TWEETING4CHANGE.COM Talks to Dr. Vivienne Ming, Chief Scientist at Gild, to Discover Why Algorithms Will Ultimately Replace Resumes
Neuroscientist Dr. Vivienne Ming claims utilizing big data to uncover hidden talent is the wave of the future-- and the only way to bring genuine diversity to the workplace
MILWAUKEE, April 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Will your blog posts, tweets and cyber imprint soon be replacing the old-fashioned resume? Those signals and what they can reveal to a carefully designed algorithm may do just that, according to Dr. Vivienne Ming. Dr. Ming has over a decade worth of work focused on human perception and cognition models, and is an influential proponent of using data-driven algorithms as predicative models of workplace success.

Dr. Ming is the Co-founder of Socos, an educational technology and data mining company, and is the Chief Scientist at Gild, where she leads data mining, analytics design and algorithm development for Gild Source, the organization's flagship recruiting technology for identifying and profiling developer candidates.
However, Dr. Ming says this technology should not be limited to the tech sector and, in fact, sees data-driven algorithms as the best way to find hidden talent and remove bias in the hiring system across all employment sectors.
"From an algorithmic point of view, you not only need to identify people who have been missed, but you also have to say why because people's instincts are always going to follow this positive discrimination bias. And if you have two people who are equally good, the one who is the same as the person hiring is much, much more likely to get the job. So really, with this algorithm, we have to say why this person should get the job and why they will be great," said Dr. Vivienne Ming, Chief Scientist at Gild.
Why where you went to school may not matter
According to Dr. Ming employers need to look for latent qualities and metacognitive skills to find the best and the brightest:
"If we can identify those and when someone possess those qualities if you give them a chance, you give them the training and the right context to succeed they will succeed." Dr. Ming, Chief Scientist at Gild. "Looking at where you went to school is a proxy, you assume because someone went to a good school, therefore they must have the qualities you desire even though that's not actually really true."
