tvsdesign celebrates ribbon cutting for science laboratory project

ATLANTA, Sept. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Design for Learning studio of tvsdesign is celebrating the opening of a new science laboratory project it designed at Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) in the Atlanta suburb of Lawrenceville. On September 22, GGC officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Allied Health and Sciences Building.
"With STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education becoming increasingly important at our nation's colleges and universities, this project represents a significant investment by the University System of Georgia in the science programs at Georgia Gwinnett College," said Robert Balke, principal with tvsdesign.
tvsdesign and its associated firm, WSP, created the 91,000-square-foot project, which includes 25 teaching laboratories for the college's biology, chemistry, physics, anatomy and physiology, exercise science, IT systems, computational sciences, digital media, and psychology programs. The building also will be home to the college's new nursing program. Laboratory facilities are visible from student corridors via windowed laboratory walls that put the sciences on display.
In addition to laboratory space, the Allied Health and Sciences Building features eight student-controlled spaces for collaborative learning and studying, 36 faculty offices, and administrative offices for the college's School of Science and Technology and the School of Health Sciences. The building was sited and designed to help further define a pedestrian axis and enclose the campus quad of the state's most rapidly growing college, which opened in 2006.
"Georgia Gwinnett College's new building offered us the chance to contribute to the college's evolution toward an environment that encourages students to stay on campus longer," Balke added.
