Turner: Taking New York City Construction Managers to School
NEW YORK, Aug. 29, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Turner Construction Company's Turner School of Construction Management provides opportunities for individuals to take their professional building skills and knowledge to the next level. Students enrolled in the program gain insights that help them form strategic relationships and target their business for quality and growth.
The Turner School of Construction Management, now approaching its 43rd year of operation, is designed to enhance the technical, administrative and managerial skills of minority and women businesses in order to make a profit and build a reputation for efficiently managing construction projects.
Two years ago, a growing demand for management talent in the New York metropolitan area spurred Turner Construction Company to offer two new advanced certificate programs. Turner partnered with City University of New York at York College in Queens and at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, to offer sessions that meet twice a week from fall until spring.
The advanced sessions examine the managerial aspects of contracting, estimating, marketing, safety, sustainability, virtual modeling, project management, scheduling and field coordination. York offers the program as part of its College of Business. Medgar Evers' program is offered through their Continuing Education department.
The programs are mostly taught by Turner adjunct professors and include information on industry trends such as Building Information Modeling and sustainability. Some of the subject matter that is reinforced, such as accounting and scheduling for example, can be applied to other professions.
"The Turner School of Construction Management programs are a true testament of Turner's commitment to our communities and the economic growth of small businesses," stated Stephanie Burns, Community Affairs Director for Turner in New York.
This past year, New York's trio of classes combined for 85 graduates ready to embrace the next step of their careers. Students appreciate the coursework just as much as the educators.
Cheryl Green, Principal Owner of Cheryl Green Studios & former Turner School of Construction Management student, offered a personal take on her experience. "The quality and content of the Advanced Construction Management Certificate Program exceeded my expectations! The knowledge, talent and skills of the [teachers] fully enriched the classroom setting. My personal highlights were OSHA, BIM and Sustainable Building classes... as well as lectures from actual 'on the job' experiences (at construction sites) relating to problem analysis and resolution. I will be recommending this program to my colleagues."
In addition to individuals looking to build their skills to lead their project teams, the Turner School of Construction Management attracts representatives from various agencies such as the New York City School Construction Authority and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
