Turner Construction Company Commences Long-Anticipated Construction on Garfield Senior High School Auditorium
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Turner Construction Company is pleased to announce the launch of construction at Garfield Senior High School. In 2007, a fire destroyed Garfield Senior High's historic auditorium, leaving thousands of students without an auditorium for four years. After years of anticipation from the community, this $40 million renovation will provide new, state-of-the-art facilities featuring architectural elements from the historic 1924 building. The new edifice will again be a central place for awards ceremonies, plays, and meetings for thousands of students and the community.
The Garfield Senior High School renovation includes a new 1,400-seat performing arts auditorium, a three-story classroom building, and an administration building. The new facilities will feature 15 modern classrooms, administrative offices, and a black box theatre.
Turner Construction Company will also renovate a student plaza which will be dedicated to the school's late math teacher, Jaime Escalante. As a result of his success in the classroom, Escalante was the subject of the 1988 Academy Award nominated film, Stand and Deliver. A central part of the student plaza project will be four public art components. Construction is anticipated to be complete in 2013.
Vice President and General Manager for Turner's Southern California office, Kevin Dow, states, "We will work diligently with LAUSD to ensure that this renovation reflects the spirit of Garfield High and the needs of the community. We are very excited to be a part of this special project."
