NEW HAVEN, Conn., Jan. 11, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- In order to make high quality treatment more accessible to individuals and families in New Haven and surrounding communities, Turnbridge introduces outpatient addiction treatment services and announces it now accepts Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield in-network coverage.
Turnbridge, located in New Haven, Connecticut, has become one of the nation's leading addiction treatment programs for emerging adults–people between the ages of 17 and 24. It had to overcome significant odds to achieve this distinction. When the program was getting started in 2003, it faced staunch opposition from residents and city officials who attempted to use zoning bylaws to prevent it from acquiring property. Addiction treatment providers often face so-called "not in my backyard" challenges that can limit the availability of care. Turnbridge founders, a deeply committed group of individuals in recovery, passionately advocated for their cause in Connecticut's Supreme Court, achieved a settlement, and went to work making their vision a reality.
Since fighting for its place in New Haven, Turnbridge has striven to be an exceptional care provider and neighbor. Over time, Turnbridge has earned the respect and cooperation of many in the New Haven business and education communities. Turnbridge is proud to make even more care available to the people of New Haven through its new outpatient treatment services. The need for quality individualized addiction and mental health treatment has never been greater.
Nationwide and in Connecticut, the drug overdose and addiction problem is growing. Connecticut's chief medical examiner reported a 25 percent increase in overdose deaths in 2016, continuing the trend from recent years. Connecticut is not alone. The entire country continues to suffer from epidemic rates of addiction and overdose.
For more than 15 years, people from around the country have travelled to Turnbridge in New Haven to receive high-quality integrated addiction treatment. Turnbridge, with a clinical center on Orange Street and sober living homes throughout New Haven, has earned a reputation as a highly effective program that helps people achieve lasting recovery, independence, and improved well-being.
Turnbridge is an innovator in the addiction treatment field. They developed a graduated three-phased treatment program that helps clients gain skills and independence at their own pace. They were among the first programs in the country to eliminate arbitrary lengths of stay and to measure progress and program completion one client at a time. They also pioneered the gradual re-immersion of clients into real-world settings and situations that may have previously triggered addictive behaviors in order to develop stronger resilience while in treatment and reduce the likelihood of relapse. Outcome study data and nationwide referrals from medical professionals, alumni, and client family members substantiate the program's effectiveness. A recent outcome study indicated that 95 percent of people who complete the Turnbridge program achieve one year of sobriety, and more that 80 percent achieved two years of sobriety. The study also showed that 95 percent of Turnbridge clients with 270 days of treatment experienced significant behavioral improvements including better physical and mental health, the ability to maintain employment, better interpersonal relationships, and overall self-sufficiency.
Turnbridge CEO and founder, David Vieau, attributes much of the program's success to the New Haven community. "We wouldn't be where we are today without the generosity, diversity, and vibrancy of the New Haven community. Our ability to connect Turnbridge clients with the area's many educational opportunities, jobs, and volunteer opportunities are essential to our clients' success. And New Haven has one of the country's most active and welcoming recovery communities." Community connection is one of the reasons that Turnbridge is proud to make outpatient services available to New Haven and surrounding cities and towns.
In addition to opening its clinical center on Orange Street for outpatient and intensive outpatient treatment, Turnbridge has also become an in-network Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield provider. "Making our high-quality clinical care accessible to more people right here in our New Haven home is a way of giving back to a community that has done so much for us and our clients." Now, anyone within commuting distance can receive individualized treatment for addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders from the program's highly experienced and licensed professionals.
During Turnbridge's outpatient program ribbon-cutting ceremony, New Haven mayor Toni Harp said, "Cities throughout the nation have been enduring a tragic opioid epidemic. To host an effective facility like Turnbridge that provides excellent services and gives people a sense of hope is really helpful for the afflicted in New Haven." The opening event was also attended by state's attorney Patrick Griffin and the city's health director Dr. Byron Kennedy.
