Türk Telekom Becomes Turkey's Leading Telecom Company in Carbon Disclosure Project Reporting

Türk Telekom is the first telecommunication company which reports to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) by measuring its carbon emissions in Turkey in 2011.

Acting with this vision, Türk Telekom has identified its sustainability targets and implemented the process for developing a greenhouse gas management strategy. Türk Telekom started its sustainable development program with the solar energy panels installed for backing up energy in the beginning of 90s. Today, there are 52 locations. Türk Telekom also established a "sustainability committee" at the CEO level in 2010. Aiming to create a better future for the next generations with the leadership of the committee, Türk Telekom has transformed its office applications and business processes according to the principles of sustainability. Accordingly, in 2011 Türk Telekom was the first telecommunication company reporting from Turkey to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)* by measuring its carbon emission. As a result of the evaluations carried out among the companies reporting to CDP, Türk Telekom has been named one of the best two companies reporting to CDP in terms of methodology and transparency.
Türk Telekom uses its headquarters and its network of 24 thousand employees and buildings all over Turkey to carry out large scale feasibility studies related to low carbon and sustainability in its business applications.
Türk Telekom carries out several sustainability projects including alternative energy use, employing solar and wind energy, employing videoconference technology Telepresence. Türk Telekom also uses environment friendly font Ecofont, e-training, fleet optimization and energy saving products and services. Upon completion of this energy transformation program by 2014, Türk Telekom will be able to prevent an amount of carbon emission equaling to carbon emission reduction of a forest of 5.400 hectares.
*CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) is considered the most comprehensive environmental project in the world, with the aim of having all publicly listed companies in the world disclose their greenhouse emissions and risk management policies related to climate change to their corporate investors. The CDP project carries out its works in Turkey is hosted by the Sabancı University Faculty of Management Sciences.
What is carbon neutral?
For offsetting the greenhouse gases emitted as a result of any activity performed by any individual or company and having net "0" emission, to prevent/decrease the greenhouse gas emission equal to the amount emitted by the same individual or company or to assist in decreasing the carbon emission through another project by buying carbon credit equal to this emitted amount.
