TSA Union to Celebrate Orlando Workers at Sunday Event
Local labor activists to show support for AFGE and its TSA members
ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 25, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Federation of Government Employees, the union for Transportation Security Officers (TSO) in Orlando, throughout Florida and across the country, will show its gratitude for the TSA workforce with a Solidarity Event Sunday, Feb. 27, at the Orlando International Airport. AFGE National President John Gage and National Secretary-Treasurer J. David Cox will be in attendance at the event.
"In appreciation of their hard work and commitment to protecting this nation, AFGE would publicly like to say 'thank you' to every TSO, and in particular, those in Orlando," Gage said.
After a nine-year battle to secure workplace protections for Transportation Security Administration employees, AFGE on Feb. 4 applauded TSA Administrator John Pistole for affirming collective bargaining rights and praised TSOs across the country for their unwavering commitment and tenacity in fighting for collective bargaining rights to be settled.
AFGE also is an election for exclusive union representation at TSA. One year ago, AFGE filed a petition with the Federal Labor Relations Authority for exclusive union representation at TSA, and that election has finally been called for March 9-April 19.
AFGE's Solidarity Stand will be attended by AFGE leaders and activists, as well as members of the AFL-CIO and its affiliate unions.
TSOs in Orlando are members of AFGE Local 556, which includes airports in Daytona, Gainesville, Jacksonville, Orlando, Panama City, Pensacola, Sanford, Sarasota, St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Tampa, and Tallahassee.
AFGE is the only union to represent TSOs since the agency's inception, and currently has more than 12,000 dues-paying members in 40 AFGE TSA Locals across the country. With more than 264,000 dues-paying members in more than 75 federal and D.C. government agencies, AFGE is the single largest federal employee union in the country.
