TSA Union to Celebrate Oakland TSA Employees at Wednesday Solidarity Event
Local labor activists to show support for AFGE and its TSA members
OAKLAND, March 8, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Federation of Government Employees, the union for Transportation Security Officers (TSO) in Oakland, throughout California and across the country, will show its gratitude for the TSA workforce with a Solidarity Event and Rally March 9 at the Oakland Airport. AFGE Director of Field Services and Education Bill Fletcher and AFGE General Counsel David Borer will be on hand for the event.
"In appreciation of their hard work and commitment to protecting this nation, AFGE would publicly like to say 'thank you' to every TSO, and in particular, those in Oakland," AFGE District 12 National Vice President Eugene Hudson said.
AFGE's Solidarity Event will be attended by AFGE leaders and activists, as well as members of the Alameda Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO and many of the AFL-CIO's affiliate unions.
After a nine-year battle to secure workplace protections for Transportation Security Administration employees, AFGE on Feb. 4 applauded TSA Administrator Pistole for affirming collective bargaining rights and praised TSOs across the country for their unwavering commitment and tenacity in fighting for collective bargaining rights to be settled.
AFGE also is in an election for exclusive union representation at TSA. One year ago, AFGE filed a petition with the Federal Labor Relations Authority for exclusive union representation at TSA, and that election has finally been called for March 9-April 19.
TSOs in Oakland are part of AFGE Local 1234, which covers airports in California, Arizona, Hawaii and Nevada.
AFGE is the only union to represent TSOs since the agency's inception, and currently has more than 12,000 dues-paying members in 40 AFGE TSA Locals across the country. With more than 265,000 dues-paying members in more than 75 federal and D.C. government agencies, AFGE is the single largest federal employee union in the country.
