Monarch Beverage realized early on that compressed natural gas made sense for their operation and their bottom line, said Monarch Senior Vice President of Operations, Fred Dufour.
The station, designed and built by TruStar Energy, is a big part of Monarch's fueling strategy, allowing them to fuel their 28 Kenworth® T440 tractors at their Indianapolis location. The large three-compressor fast-fill station is capable of delivering more than 11 gallons of CNG per minute, allowing Monarch to fuel a truck in under 10 minutes, which is a target that Dufour was shooting for.
"We wanted to get close to a diesel fill rate, and I think we're there. Every load we're taking 60 gallons or less and filling in seven to eight minutes," said Dufour, adding that having their station onsite represented a huge time saver as they were forced to drive 22 miles to a public fueling station prior to constructing their own.
"The drivers are ecstatic about having on-site fueling and they're excited about the trucks. In the end, drivers will either make you or break you and for Monarch, they've made the transition to CNG a huge success," said Dufour.
According to Dufour, the Monarch Beverage fleet consumes nearly 1 million gallons of diesel per year, and by shifting to compressed natural gas, they'll be on track to reduce fuel costs by 60% once the conversion is complete, which translates to a $2 to $3 million dollar savings in fuel per year.
Regarding the future, Dufour says that a public-access station is not out of the question as they have a pad ready to accept a fourth compressor if demand is high enough – or other local fleets approach them regarding the possibility of fueling non Monarch fleets.
