SEATTLE, March 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Trupanion, a company that offers medical insurance for cats and dogs, today reported that through its TruGiving philanthropy platform, the company raised $209,885 for nonprofit animal welfare organizations across North America in 2014.
The company is now calling on all pet-passionate supporters to help them decide the nonprofits to donate to next.
Over the next two months voting will be open to the public to select the next animal welfare nonprofits Trupanion will support in its Member Donation Program. The three nonprofits who receive the most votes will be added to its TruGiving program to receive donations from the company.
The TruGiving platform—comprised of Trupanion's Shelter Support Program, Volunteer Program, and Member Donation Program— facilitates charitable contributions from the corporate level and from their pet-passionate community of employees, members and veterinarians to promote the well-being of cats and dogs and foster responsible pet ownership.
Shelter Support Program
In 2014, Trupanion donated nearly $105,000 to 193 animal shelters across North America through its Shelter Support Program. Since its inception in 2013, Trupanion has more than doubled the number of shelters in the program and increased donations by 204 percent, providing financial support to shelters and giving shelter pets a better chance at a forever home.
Through this program, Trupanion partners with shelters to provide donations that can be used for any aspect of the shelter – everything from food and toys to technology and infrastructure. The program varies from state to state. Each shelter is also offered the ability to give new pet owners certificates for 30 days of medical coverage for their new cat or dog.
Member Donation Program
As a means for its pet-passionate customers to engage in TruGiving, Trupanion established the Member Donation Program, where it facilitates $1 monthly donations that coincide with premium payments to pet-focused nonprofit organizations. In 2014, Trupanion members donated $104,197 to animal welfare organizations like The American Humane Association, The Farley Foundation and National Canine Cancer Foundation through the Member Donation Program.
Volunteer Program
Deeply ingrained in Trupanion's culture – and a core component of TruGiving – is the genuine love for animals and commitment to the community that Trupanion employees have. Trupanion employees banded together last December to collect and donate 4 tons of dog and cat food to a local animal shelter, they also aid shelters directly through fundraising, volunteer time, and serving as foster homes. In the second half of 2014, employees volunteered 237 total hours through Trupanion's newly-launched Volunteer Program at organizations like Seattle Humane Society, PAWS, Pasado's Safe Haven, Washington Trails Association and Seattle Aquarium, as well as food banks and senior centers.
"Trupanion continues to blaze a trail in the pet medical insurance industry by setting high standards for animal welfare ethics and strong values," said Darryl Rawlings, CEO of Trupanion. "Our passion for pets is the foundation of our company – our mission is to help the pets we all love receive the best care, even those who aren't insured. We're able to do this through our TruGiving program."
