Trump's doublespeak at American Legion convention doesn't fool veterans, VA union leader says

WASHINGTON, Sept. 1, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- American Federation of Government Employees National President J. David Cox Sr. today issued the following statement in response to Donald Trump's comments before the American Legion National Convention today:

"Donald Trump can't have it both ways when it comes to privatizing the VA.

The largest union representing VA employees is blasting Donald Trump for comments he made at the American Legion National Convention on Sept. 1. Trump advocated dismantling the health care system that millions of veterans rely on, even while calling the VA system a 'public trust'. The American Federation of Government Employees represents 670,000 federal and D.C. government employees nationwide, including 220,000 in the Department of Veterans Affairs.

"Out of one side of his mouth he says the VA is a 'public trust' that will remain 'a public system,' then turns around and calls it 'a terrible situation' and advocates dismantling the health care system millions of veterans rely on.

"Newsflash Donald: veterans aren't falling for it. They won't let you sell them out just so some hospital CEO can profit off their war wounds."

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is the largest federal employee union, representing 670,000 workers in the federal government and the government of the District of Columbia. AFGE represents 220,000 employees in the Department of Veterans Affairs.
