Johnson was selected as the Technology Executive of the Year based on his leadership in growing Tripwire and his passion for working with the local community. Despite the downturn in overall IT spending in 2009, Tripwire experienced steady growth as companies turned to Tripwire to improve their processes to ensure security and achieve continuous compliance. Under Johnson's leadership, Tripwire saw its 2009 revenues grow by 19 percent, while pre-tax profits of $8.8 million demonstrated 95 percent growth, year-over-year for the company. In the five years that Johnson has led Tripwire, the company has continued to grow revenues, bookings, employee headcount and its customer base. The company also continues to be recognized for its commitment to its staff and the environment, with Oregon Business Magazine honoring the company as one of Oregon's "100 Best Places to Work" and one of the state's "100 Best Green Companies."
Johnson works closely with high-tech and business leaders, legislative leaders and the Oregon University System to educate Oregonians on the long-term economic benefits of investing in Oregon's universities. One of his top priorities is to make Oregon's first Signature Research Center, Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnology Institute (ONAMI), a success. The ONAMI Research Center is a joint collaboration between several Oregon University System campuses – led by Oregon State University (OSU) and University of Oregon (UO) – and the private sector, including Hewlett-Packard and the Pacific Northwest National Labs (PNNL). Johnson is also a founding partner and board member of Social Venture Partners Portland (SVPP), a non-profit organization whose goal is to develop philanthropy and volunteerism to achieve positive social change within the community.
As CEO, Johnson has set an example for the company by being both actively involved and a consistent contributor to the Oregon community. He received the Oregon State University Distinguished Citizen Award at the June 2001 Commencement for this community work. Following his lead, Tripwire employees have returned more than $23,000 to the community through a combination of donated goods, money, and volunteer time. In 2007 their community work was recognized by Oregon Monthly magazine's annual Light a Fire Award.
The Oregon Technology Executive of the Year Award is chosen by a selection committee comprised of the program's previous Technology Executive of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Award recipients. Nominations are generated by the committee and from the technology community at large.
"I am humbled to be honored with such a prestigious nomination," said Johnson. "Even during a difficult economic period, Tripwire has made great strides moving us into the future and I credit everyone in this organization for Tripwire's success. I feel very fortunate that I am able to come to work with such a distinguished team every day."
"The Oregon Technology Awards are very pleased to present Jim as this year's honoree," said Jennifer Bosze, executive director, TechAmerica Oregon. "Choosing a winner is never easy with so many qualified candidates, however this year, the achievements of Tripwire this past year made Jim the top choice of the selection committee."
