Trident and Flingo® Deliver the World's First Deployment of Sync Apps(SM) on Connected TVs
Flingo's Sync Apps are Internet TV Applications that Deliver a New Level of Connectivity on the Home Entertainment Center
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan. 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Trident Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: TRID), a leading provider of set-top box and TV semiconductor solutions, today announced that it has integrated Flingo's Sync App(SM) technology onto its digital TV (DTV) platform to make TV watching more fun and engaging through a new level of interactivity with TV programming. Flingo is one of the world's largest publishers of Connected TV Apps for media companies such as CBS, Fox, Warner Bros, TV Guide and MTV Networks on platforms from Samsung, Vizio, LG and Google TV. Flingo's Sync Apps technology enables consumers to interact with applications specifically designed for the show they are watching when it is delivered through streaming video or broadcast television.
According to recent research by Nielsen, the average consumer now spends over five hours per day watching television. Using Sync Apps, consumers have a level of interactivity never before possible in this environment. TV viewers can play trivia games on their favorite shows while they are watching them, buy products they see onscreen with a click of a remote control, or even enable TV viewers to see tweets and reviews from friends about the show they are currently watching. Furthermore, because Flingo works with the major broadcast companies to develop Sync Apps for their television programs, the broadcast companies can finally embrace the connected TV opportunity instead of worrying about cannibalizing cable revenue or ratings.
"By integrating the IP of leaders such as Flingo, Trident is driving the conversion between the TV and the Internet by bringing online services and content onto the TV platform," said Dirk Wieberneit, senior vice president and general manager of the Trident TV Business unit. "We believe this connected TV is just the first step in delivering a truly extended Connected Home and as a leader in both set-top box and TV, Trident intends to be at the forefront of this multimedia revolution. We'll be showing our innovative platform solutions at CES 2011 - including a spectacular Cinema TV with a 21:9 screen that we believe could be the killer format for these interactive applications and enhanced TV experiences."
"By partnering with the world's largest provider of DTV chipsets and a leader in the 21:9 format, we can bring Sync Apps to millions of consumers worldwide with a great user experience," said Ashwin Navin, Founder and CEO of Flingo. "The Trident platform is a robust environment to launch applications authenticated by and synchronized with linear broadcast television."
