Trex Honored With 2013 Green Award From Washingtonian Magazine
Company Named Local "Green Giant" for Working to Save Natural Resources
WINCHESTER, Va., May 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- When it comes to environmental stewardship, Trex Company leads by example. The world's largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing recently received the 2013 Green Award from Washingtonian magazine. The annual awards recognize citizens, companies and organizations in the DC metro area that are working to improve the environment and encourage eco-friendly living.
Built on green principles and values, Trex offers consumers a truly environmentally responsible choice. The entire high-performance Trex decking portfolio - including Trex Transcend®, Trex Enhance® and Trex Select® - is manufactured from more than 95 percent recycled content, including reclaimed wood and sawdust, as well as plastic from many common household items – such as case overwraps, sandwich/bread bags, newspaper sleeves, dry cleaning bags and grocery/retail bags.
In fact, Trex salvages and keeps more than 400 million pounds of plastic and wood scrap out of landfills each year – more than 2.5 billion pounds total from 2007 through 2012 alone. The company's manufacturing process also is as green as its final product, with a proprietary method that recycles factory refuse back into the manufacturing line.
"It's always rewarding to be recognized for our efforts to help preserve the environment and set the standard for eco-friendly outdoor living products, but this honor is especially meaningful because our dedication to sustainability truly begins at the local level," said Ronald W. Kaplan, chairman, president and CEO of Trex. "Trex supports community-based recycling initiatives and education, and we're proud to stand side-by-side with other environmental advocates making an impact in our own backyard."
Trex regularly seeks third-party audits to ensure that it is continually improving green practices while meeting all environmental, health and safety guidelines and industry regulations. The company is the first in the wood-alternative decking industry to receive an International Code Council Evaluation Service® (ICC-ES)* SAVE Verification for Recycled Content.
In February, Trex took top honors in the decking products category of Green Builder Media's
2013 Reader's Choice Awards, when more than 40 percent of readers who voted selected Trex decking as the "greenest" in the industry. The following month, Kaplan received the Green Company Executive Award from Pennsylvania-based Emerald Asset Management for his commitment to sustainable practices.
The May issue of Washingtonian magazine features all the 2013 Green Awards winners.
