Treasurer Nappier Announces 2012 CHET Dream Big! Competition Winners
Fourth Annual Contest Asked Kids How They Will Change the World After College
HARTFORD, Conn., May 31, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Connecticut State Treasurer Denise L. Nappier, who serves as trustee for the Connecticut Higher Education Trust (CHET), today announced the 96 winners of the 2012 CHET Dream Big! Competition, a drawing and essay contest for Connecticut students in grades Kindergarten through five. The winners were recognized at an official awards ceremony held on May 10th at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.
"This year, the CHET Dream Big! Competition brought in a record number of drawings and essays from Connecticut students who are dreaming about how they'll change the world after college," said Treasurer Nappier. "We received more than 5,400 entries – a 150 percent increase over the number of entries received last year, and more than triple the number from when the annual competition started four years ago. It was clear that students put a great deal of time and thought into their submissions, and it was inspiring to see their passion for all the ways they plan to make a difference in the world."
The competition challenged students to imagine what they could accomplish with a college education. Entries were received from 112 of Connecticut's 169 cities and towns. Winners received a $300 CHET account, which was awarded to the parent or legal guardian of student winners.
"Our goal is to get families to invest early for future education expenses so that they can get a head start on their children's future and to support their dreams," said Treasurer Nappier.
Winners were selected from grades Kindergarten – five from each county in Connecticut. Children in grades Kindergarten – three through were asked to draw a picture that answers the question, "What do I want to do after I go to college?" Students in grades four and five were asked to write an essay explaining how they will change the world after college. A panel of judges, including volunteers from the State Treasurer's Office, TIAA-CREF Tuition Financing, Inc. and local professionals, selected the competition winners.
The CHET Dream Big! Competition ran from January 30 through March 30, 2012. The winning entries are on display at http://www.chetdreambig.com.
