Travel Insurance Cancellation Guide if "Bomb Cyclone" Grayson Prevents You From Traveling
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Jan. 3, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Threatening pressure drops along the East Coast have Winter Storm Grayson moving north as a "bomb cyclone". With widespread travel being halted, leading travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth, explains your travel insurance cancellation options if the storm freezes your travel plans.
Most travel insurance policies with the Trip Cancellation benefit can refund trips canceled if a winter storm prevents you from reaching your destination. In order to have coverage for Winter Storm Grayson, you must have bought a Trip Cancellation policy before the storm was named on January 2, 2018.
Cancellation Coverage if You're Stuck at the Airport
Airlines are canceling flights in and out of southern airports because of Winter Storm Grayson. Some southern airports are shutting down altogether.
If the storm significantly delays or cancels your flight, or closes your airport, Trip Cancellation may reimburse 100% of your trip costs. Your original flight must be delayed at least 12-48 hours, depending on your policy, before cancellation coverage is available.
Cancellation Coverage if You're Stuck at Home
Icy conditions have already caused stretches of highway closures in Florida. For cancellation coverage to be available, you must be unable to make it to the airport due to a road closure, or involved in an accident on your way.
With snow and ice likely all the way up the East Coast, poor driving conditions aren't necessarily enough to be refunded to cancel through travel insurance. Simply not wanting to drive in bad weather is not covered by Trip Cancellation.
Squaremouth's Winter Storm Grayson and Travel Insurance Information Center explains travel insurance coverage with up-to-date information for travelers affected by the storm, including answers to FAQs and statements from providers.
