Travel Insurance Can Cover Winter Storm Travel Woes, says Squaremouth
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Feb. 7, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Winter Storm Liam is halting flights throughout major travel hubs including Boston, New York, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia, causing many airlines to delay, divert or cancel flights. Leading travel insurance comparison website, Squaremouth, explains travel insurance coverage when a winter storm disrupts travel.
Delayed or Cancelled Flight
If a traveler's flight is delayed or cancelled because of Winter Storm Liam, travel insurance can pay them back for their meals, hotel accommodations and local transportation such as a taxi from the airport to the hotel. The policy will always specify how long it takes for this coverage to become available; usually a flight must be delayed 3, 6 or 12 hours.
Claim Caution: Make sure to have a 'paper trail'. Use a debit or credit card to pay for meals, hotels and local transportation. If you pay with cash, don't throw away receipts. To claim for these expenses travelers must show this documentation.
Dangerous Driving Conditions
Some travel insurance policies will pay the traveler back for missed flights and other trip costs if they're involved in an accident on their way to the airport. A few policies will cover travelers who are not directly involved in an accident but are stuck in traffic due to an accident.
Claim Caution: A police report that documents the accident will be needed when making a claim. Don't leave the scene of the accident without contacting local authorities.
Stuck En Route
If a traveler is stuck in a city where they are catching a connecting flight, travel insurance can cover the airfare to catch the traveler up to reach their destination. This benefit can also pay travelers back for meals, hotels and local transportation once they've waited the specified amount of time in the policy.
Claim Caution: Some policies will only cover these costs if the traveler is trying to catch up to a cruise or planned tour. Look at the policy language to see if the Missed Connection coverage is limited to "Cruise only" or "Cruise and tour only."
