Travel Advantage Network Employees Raise Funds for Child's Play
Maryland company focuses philanthropic efforts on enriching children's lives during hospital stays.
MILLERSVILLE, Md., Feb. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Employees of Travel Advantage Network (TAN), a wholesale vacation accommodations program, raised $850 during a month-long fundraising event for Child's Play, a game industry charity committed to improving the lives of children in hospitals by providing toys and games. Organized in 2003 by Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins of the online comic strip Penny Arcade, Child's Play was created in response to the media's negative depiction of gamers and the gamer culture. The pair has rallied the gaming community and its supporters to donate holiday gifts such as video game consoles and video games to a network of 80 hospitals worldwide.
Motivated by the charitable efforts of the company's president, Brad Callahan, Travel Advantage Network employees embrace the philanthropic spirit each month by campaigning for one of a diverse selection of charities. TAN account specialist Tiffany Bartee chose to support Child's Play throughout the month of January because of her interest in enhancing the lives of ailing children.
"This charity means a great deal to me. It's so important for these children to focus on fun during their extended hospital stays. Interactive gaming consoles are a social outlet for younger patients and studies have shown positive results from their use. The games increase the effectiveness in treatment and are used as a source of comfort," stated Bartee.
Fundraising efforts for Child's Play included a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction boasting items such as a queen size duvet insert and cover. Additional fundraising events included a pay-to-wear-jeans day and a lunch sale.
