NEW YORK, Jan. 31, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The federal litigation involving transvaginal mesh lawsuits (http://www.transvaginalmeshlawsuithelp.com/) filed against Ethicon, Inc. continues to move forward in the multidistrict litigation underway in U.S. District Court, Southern District of West Virginia, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. According to an Order issued on January 29th, U.S. District Judge Joseph Goodwin has selected vaginal mesh lawsuits for the proceeding's third round of bellwether trials, which are to involve cases alleging injury due to Ethicon's Gynecare Prolift mesh. The Order further directs that the first trial involving a Prolift lawsuit will begin on December 4, 2014. (In re: Ethicon, Inc., Pelvic Repair Systems Products Liability Litigation - MDL No. 2327)

"Our Firm is representing numerous women who suffered serious vaginal mesh complications, allegedly due to Prolift and other devices manufactured by Ethicon. We look forward to the start of trials in the federal proceeding, as they may provide insight into the way juries might rule in similar lawsuits," says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free legal evaluations to women who allegedly suffered mesh erosion, pain, scarring, infection and other serious vaginal mesh complications following the implantation of surgical mesh to treat pelvic organ prolapse or stress urinary incontinence.
Vaginal Mesh Lawsuits
According to court documents, Ethicon, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, is named a defendant in more than 13,000 transvaginal mesh lawsuits that have been filed in the Southern District of West Virginia. Bernstein Liebhard LLP partner, Jeffrey S. Grand, is serving on the Plaintiffs' Steering Committees in the federal Ethicon litigation.
Mr. Grand has also been named Co-Liaison Counsel in a multicounty litigation underway in New Jersey's Atlantic County Superior Court, where more than 4,600 vaginal mesh lawsuits have been filed against Ethicon. He also served on the Plaintiff's team in that proceeding's first trial. That case concluded last March, when the Plaintiff was awarded more than $11 million for injuries she suffered from Prolift mesh. (In re: Pelvic Mesh/Gynecare Litigation, No. 6341-10)
The federal Ethicon vaginal mesh litigation is one of several currently underway in the Southern District of West Virginia. Mr. Grand is also serving on the Plaintiffs' Steering Committees for three other federal vaginal mesh proceedings, including: American Medical Systems, Inc. (MDL No. 2325); Boston Scientific Corp., (MDL No. 2326); and C.R. Bard, Inc., (MDL No. 2187). He was also named Co-Liaison Counsel in a second litigation underway in Atlantic County Superior Court for lawsuits involving C.R. Bard products. (In re: Pelvic Mesh Litigation/Bard, No. L-6339-10)
