Transporting Children to Better Health Named a Mutual of America 2011 Community Partnership Award Winner
Birmingham Program Provides Safe, Reliable Transportation to Healthcare Resources
NEW YORK, Nov. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Mutual of America announced today that the Transporting Children to Better Health program was named a Merit Finalist of the 2011 Community Partnership Award competition.
An estimated 330,000 children in Alabama don't receive medical assistance because their families have no way to get them to a healthcare facility. The Transporting Children to Better Health program is part of Kid One Transport, which was founded in 1997 to bridge the gap between children in need and the healthcare they require. Partners in the program include Children's Hospital, UAB Specialized Health Clinics and over 300 private and public healthcare providers.
"An astounding 85 percent of Kid One Transport clients either do not own a car or cannot drive it because of financial constraints, including not having the money to repair the vehicle or buy gas," explains president and CEO Karen Peterlin.
Kid One Transport now operates a fleet of 19 vehicles and serves 35 counties throughout most of Alabama, and also serves expectant mothers.
