Trace3 Honors San Francisco Giants CIO for Pioneering Game-Changing Technology
Bill Schlough Wins Annual Trace3 Outlier Award for Creating Technologies that Improve the Fan Experience and Team Performance
IRVINE, Calif., March 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Trace3, a pioneer in business transformation solutions, today announced that its 2016 Trace3 Outlier Award has been given to Bill Schlough, SVP & CIO, San Francisco Giants.
The annual Trace3 Outlier Award honors exceptional individuals who consistently deliver dynamic innovation and outstanding leadership in the field of information technology. The Trace3 Outlier Award was created to recognize technology leaders who adopt innovative technologies to transform their businesses and drive market success.
At the San Francisco Giants, Mr. Schlough has been a fundamental force in transforming the way technology is viewed in the sports industry.
When the team bade farewell to Candlestick Park in 2000 and opened AT&T Park, Schlough set out to use technology to enhance the fan experience. In short order, his team envisioned and implemented a number of technology solutions, many of which are now pervasive throughout Major League Baseball. This included free, high-performance Wi-Fi, developing and launching engaging mobile apps and systems to support electronic ticket transfer.
"The technology infrastructure we've put in place at AT&T Park is a huge differentiator for the fan experience," said Schlough. "In fact, MLB points to the Giants as a gold standard that other clubs can look to in creating a compelling fan experience and catering to a younger demographic."
Under his leadership, the Giants have turned IT from a cost center into a strategic enabler for the business. Schlough is also working to raise performance on the field with new, proprietary technologies for scouting and identifying talent, capturing statistics about player tendencies and performance, and making better decisions in-game.
"We are delighted to recognize Bill's impressive achievements that leverage innovative technologies in ways that have never been imagined," said Chad Cardenas, President & CIO of Trace3. "Bill has a track record of challenging the status quo and pushing IT in ways that deviate from the norm and place IT at the intersection of business and technology."
In his 17 seasons as CIO of the Giants, Schlough has become one of the most respected technology leaders in the sports and entertainment industry. Named Information Week's CIO of the Year in 2012, Bill has also been a judge and keynote speaker at past Trace3 Outlier Award events. He accepted the first CIO position ever created in professional sports back in 1999—and has helped lead the Giants to three World Series championships in a five-year span.
Cardenas said that all five Outlier Award finalists this year were chosen for helping their companies to continually evolve through a culture of innovation and risk-taking. Other finalists for 2016 included Cory Priggs, Sr. Director, Global Consumer Technology, Taco Bell; Michael Peterson, VP and CIO, CHG Healthcare; Mukesh Mehta, CIO, Cetera Financial; Rob Ruth, CIO, High Tail; Robin Gordon, Chief Data Officer, Corelogic; Victor Fetter, CIO, LPL Financial.
Jon Swartz, San Francisco Bureau Chief, USA Today, served with other distinguished judges to select this year's Trace3 Outlier award winner.
"It was great to meet these talented CIOs at the EVOLVE conference, and learn how they are leveraging Trace3's services. As a baseball fan and a tech reporter, I was beyond impressed by the way Schlough is leveraging this game-changing technology," said Swartz.
Trace3's Outlier Award Judges also included Andy Prenot, Americas Executive for Enterprise Business Solutions and the office of the CIO, Netapp; Ashley Sprague, CIO, Netflix; Barton Warner, Director, Infrastructure Engineering and Architecture, Capital Group; Frank Palase, SVP of IT Strategy and Innovation, DirecTV; Maryfran Johnson, Editor-in-Chief, CIO Magazine; Sherri Hammons, CIO, IQ Navigator; and Thiyageswaran Ramasamy, VP of IT, NBC Universal.
