TPRF Responds to Nepal Earthquake With Aid for Villagers
LOS ANGELES, April 27, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF) responded swiftly to the devastating April 25 earthquake in Nepal, providing food, water and shelter to hundreds of villagers in the days following the 7.8 magnitude quake. The U.S.-based humanitarian nonprofit organization also launched a fundraising campaign to be able to expand assistance to those who are in desperate need of help.
"Our hearts go out to the people of Nepal," said Linda Pascotto, chair of TPRF's board of directors. "We want to help in any way we can."
Immediately after the earthquake struck, TPRF opened the doors of its Food for People (FFP) facility to hundreds of local residents seeking safe shelter in the mountainous area of Tasarpu, which lies 25 miles from the capital of Kathmandu. Many nearby villagers' homes were destroyed, and people found refuge from the elements in the modern building, which was constructed in 2009. The facility normally functions as a dining hall, serving more than 8,000 nutritious meals to local children and elderly people each month. In the aftermath of the earthquake, the FFP facility is serving meals and purified water to anyone from the surrounding area in need. Approximately 300 people are sleeping there each night.
As aftershocks continue to cause damage and fear among residents, TPRF is in the process of assessing needs and raising funds to be able to continue providing food, water and supplies to the Tasarpu community. To contribute to this effort use this special TPRF donation form.
Food for People was established by Prem Rawat through TPRF with the goals of providing nutritious, hot meals for children and infirm adults using local foods; employing local villagers; offering hygiene and agricultural education; and enlisting community leaders to help design and adjust the program. In addition to Nepal, there are FFP facilities in Ghana and India.
