TPRF Offers Matching Grant to Aid Worldwide Hunger-Relief Effort

LOS ANGELES, May 3, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF) will provide a matching donation of up to $30,000 this year in the form of a dollar-for-dollar contribution to support hunger-relief operations around the world.

The matching grant is tied to a direct-mail appeal launched this month by World Food Program USA (WFP USA) to fund its own programs, which support hunger-fighting operations around the globe. WFP USA is the U.S. nonprofit that generates national support for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the world's largest humanitarian organization fighting hunger worldwide.

"We believe this matching grant is an excellent way to support hunger-relief initiatives where they are most needed," says TPRF President Linda Pascotto. "WFP USA's work is very much in line with TPRF's own objectives, which include providing clean water and food, with an eye on eventual self-sufficiency for those served."

WFP's goals in 2011 include delivering essentials to even the most remote locations in Pakistan, where extensive flooding left many cut off from aid in 2010. Currently, WFP is also using its logistics expertise in North Africa to assist refugees and residents in conflict-torn Libya.

Other programs target the nutritionally deficient, the majority of whom are women and children. Last year, for example, WFP provided an estimated 53,000 youngsters under age 5 and about 16,000 pregnant and breastfeeding mothers in Haiti with nutritious food to prevent malnutrition.

WFP's HIV/AIDS programs, implemented in more than 50 countries, address treatment, care and support, and impact mitigation.

Its School Meals initiative reaches about 22 million children in 60 countries each year. Programs such as Food-for-Work and Food-for-Training help people develop sustainable food sources through activities such as building water reservoirs and rehabilitating stripped farmland; Purchase 4 Progress helps small farmers market produce.
