TPRF Grant Provides Food for Pakistanis Displaced by Record Floods
A grant of US$40,000 from The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF) will provide food and water for over 8,000 displaced flood victims
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Ongoing heavy rainfall after the massive floods of late July has resulted in a continued state of emergency in Pakistan affecting over a million people. A grant of $40,000 from The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF) will provide food and water for over 8,000 displaced flood victims in the two hardest hit provinces, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhawa.
The grant was awarded to Shirkat Gah (Women's Resource Centre or SG), a Pakistani NGO that focuses on aid to women and orphans. SG is actively distributing supplies and coordinating relief efforts across the nation through partnerships with community-based organizations. This grant will completely fund their project of supplying food and fresh water to 1,100 families in two provinces. Families with women who are pregnant, lactating or infirmed will be given special consideration, as they are among the most vulnerable in such a disaster.
World news agencies report that this recent disaster caused by massive rainfall throughout Pakistan reached critical conditions only halfway through the annual monsoon season. With entire villages submerged, a United Nations official estimates many Pakistanis will be forced to rely on food aid throughout the winter.
"People had to flee their homes within minutes or hours," Dr. Saman Yazdani Khan, Regional Director of Shirkat Gah, explains. "Many left with just the clothes on their back. Although the government is busy in relief work, the task is too massive for a single entity to complete. All have to join hands to overcome this."
This is TPRF's second grant to provide aid to flood victims in Pakistan. The first grant was for $100,000 to WaterAid, an international organization that has taken a leading role in addressing the urgent need for safe drinking water in post-flood months.
TPRF President Linda Pascotto expressed her appreciation for all who donated to TPRF to make these grants possible. "TPRF is aware of the acute need for aid to the people of Pakistan at this time," she said, "and appreciates the opportunity to partner with Shirkat Gah and WaterAid to provide some assistance."
