TPRF Grant of US$30,000 Funds Long-Term Clean Water Aid in Tanzania
Grant by The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF) brings clean water to the poorest and most remote communities in Tanzania
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A grant of US$30,000 from The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF) will support the long-term Community Managed Water Supply program in remote rural areas of Tanzania that lack basic safe water.
The recipient of the grant, the international nonprofit organization WaterAid, is working in Tanzania to ensure equitable and sustainable access to water, sanitation and hygiene services for the poorest and most vulnerable communities. WaterAid reports that 884 million people worldwide are without access to safe water and 2.6 billion people do not have access to adequate sanitation.
In Tanzania the situation is critical. The average life expectancy is just 55 in a country where 18.5 million people live without access to clean water. Cattle and wild animals contaminate traditional water sources that are often miles away from where subsistence farmers struggle to make a living. High levels of illness are the inevitable consequence of a combination of unsafe water and the lack of adequate sanitation. Over 21,000 children under five die of diarrheal diseases every year.
The TPRF grant will support WaterAid's efforts to install clean water facilities in these remote areas and to develop and promote innovative schemes and technologies to ensure equitable and sustainable access to safe water. There is an urgent need to ensure investment of resources for poor communities that have been overlooked for too long. This project can serve as a model of best practice to encourage others in the water and sanitation sector to allocate aid more effectively.
TPRF's president, Linda Pascotto, observes that "this initiative will make a real difference in the poorest, most neglected communities in Tanzania, not just today but for years to come."
