BOSTON, Sept. 28, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Afghanistan is under a "Level 4: Do Not Travel" advisory for problems related to increased terrorism, crime, armed conflict, and general civil unrest. American travelers are at especially high risk of being taken hostage, kidnapped, or otherwise becoming involved in other life-threatening scenarios in this country.
Libya is also under a "Level 4" advisory, with violent crime and threats of kidnapping near hotels, tourist locations, transportation hubs, and shopping areas becoming an especially prevalent problem. As tension between opposing terrorist groups continues to rise, all travelers are advised to stay away.
Mali's "Level 4" advisory is in place to warn American citizens of threats of kidnapping, armed robbery, and terrorism. Violent crimes are especially problematic in the northern and central regions; however, travel should be avoided throughout the country.
Travel to Iraq is still restricted due to a continued "Level 4" advisory pertaining to extensive terrorism and armed conflict. Risks of violence, kidnappings, and explosive attacks are common throughout the country. All travelers are being urged to avoid traveling anywhere within Iraq.
A "Level 4" advisory for North Korea has been issued for reasons related to the "serious risk of arrest and long-term detention of U.S. Nationals." Any and all travelers planning to travel to, in, or throughout North Korea will need to receive "special validation from the Department of State."
Syria's continued "Level 4" advisory warns American citizens of the country's constant threats of terrorism, armed conflict, and civil unrest. There is no part of Syria that is safe. Chemical warfare and non-stop aerial attacks pose significant dangers to all travelers throughout the entire country. All travel to, in, and throughout Syria should be avoided at all cost.
All global travel alerts and warnings can be found online on the Department of State's website. It is advised that all travelers planning to leave the United States, for any length of time, be mindful of these advisories as well as enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive up-to-date security messages while you're away, and make it easier to find you in the case of an emergency.
