TouchDraw for Android Launches Using Xamarin
Popular iPad Vector-Drawing App now available for Android, initially launched exclusively with Samsung
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Xamarin, the company empowering over 195,000 developers to build rich, native iOS and Android apps, today announced that software and development consulting company, Elevenworks, has introduced TouchDraw for Android.
Jon Lipsky, founder of Elevenworks, chose Xamarin's platform for the iPad app, which launched in mid-2010, because of Xamarin's ability to deliver a high-performance, responsive native user interface, which is key to the success of a drawing app. He also knew that Xamarin's code-sharing capabilities across device platforms would help him reach users beyond iOS. The Android version was developed in less than four months, and shares more than 70 percent of source code with the iOS version.
"I've built my mobile app business on Xamarin's platform and it was the best decision I made," said Lipsky. "The ability to quickly get to market with an Android version that is as native and performant as the iOS app means significantly more reach and revenue without any compromises to the user experience."
TouchDraw for Android will initially be available exclusively for Samsung tablets, including support at launch for Samsung's S Pen-enabled devices. Support for the Galaxy S2 and S3 and phones will follow by the end of the year. In mid-2013, the app will be compatible with all major Android tablets.
Over 60 percent of TouchDraw's users use the app to create content for business purposes - technical drawings, professional design work and digital artwork - making stylus support a critical part of the app's functionality. Android 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich, introduced native stylus support to the Android platform. Thanks to Xamarin's complete support for native APIs, Lipsky had everything he needed. He was also able to share stylus code he had written for the iPad version.
"Tablets are increasingly being used for content creation, not just consumption," said Nat Friedman, CEO of Xamarin. "Content creation apps, like TouchDraw, are mission critical to users in the field. Xamarin's goal is to make it fast, easy and fun for developers like Jon to deliver responsive, feature-rich, high-precision native apps."
