TORONTO, May 14, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) (BSE: 532540, NSE: TCS), a leading global IT services, consulting and business solutions organization, in partnership with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), will be holding its annual competition, the goIT Student Technology Summit, later today.
The event will host 200 students, kindergarten to grade twelve, from 30 TDSB schools that have participated in goIT, TCS' flagship education initiative in Canada. The students will be tasked with providing solutions in the form of a mobile app, to address one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals put forward by the United Nations to make the world a better place by 2030.
Winners will be selected on the strength of their app concepts' ability to address societal needs in local communities. The winning teams will receive support and mentorship from TCS in 2019 through a structured training module designed to help them further advance their winning ideas.
"Staying true to our company's values, we pride ourselves on being highly engaged members of the Toronto community and have continued to grow our partnership with TDSB since it began in 2014," said Soumen Roy, Country Head, TCS Canada. "Our student outreach initiatives are aimed at equipping students with computer science and digital skills that are critically needed to prepare them for future careers and to help drive Canada's future growth and economic competitiveness."
goIT teaches students computational and design thinking skills through workshops and hands-on coding experiences led by TCS staff and volunteers. The program empowers students to leverage technology and helps prepare them for the jobs of the future. Recently, it has evolved to also include a 'Train the Teachers' element that equips teachers with the tools they need to integrate technology, computational thinking and problem solving into their planned curriculum.
"I am excited about the direction the goIT program is taking," said John Chasty, Superintendent, TDSB. "It is our job as educators to help students amplify their voice. TCS has done a great job helping us bring technology into the classroom and showing students how to apply 21st century thinking to societal challenges."
"Our most important responsibility is to empower young people with the skillsets and mindset for a Business 4.0™ world," said Balaji Ganapathy, Head, Workforce Effectiveness, TCS North America. "The long-standing partnership between TCS and TDSB is preparing a new generation of innovators to tackle some of the most critical challenges facing Canada and the world."
In 2014, TCS became the first organization to partner with TDSB to integrate goIT into the curriculum. Through its many partnerships, TCS has expanded goIT to 21 Canadian cities and reached over 8,000 students, including members of Canada's indigenous community and other underrepresented groups.
