WASHINGTON, Feb. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is released today by the Hispanic Leadership Network:

  • Nevada's total Hispanic population is 716, 501 or 26.5% of the state's population (2010 U.S. Census).
  • Nevada has the 5th largest Hispanic population nationwide (Pew Hispanic Center, 2011).
  • Nevada has 224,000 eligible Hispanic voters, 14% of all eligible voters in the state (Pew Hispanic Center, 2011).
  • Approximately one-third (33.9%) of Hispanics in Nevada are eligible to vote (Pew Hispanic Center).
  • White eligible voters outnumber Hispanic eligible voters in Nevada five-to-one; 1.1 million Whites to 224,000 Hispanics (Pew Hispanic Center, 2011).
  • Nevada has the highest unemployment rate nationwide at 12.6%; among Hispanics the unemployment rate is even worse at 19% (NBC Latino, 2012).
  • In the 2008 Nevada GOP Caucus, Hispanic voters favored Mitt Romney (41%) over John McCain (25%); Romney won the Republican caucus (CNN, 2008).
  • In the 2008 presidential election, President Barack Obama (D) won 78% of the Hispanic vote versus John McCain's (R) 20% share (Pew Hispanic Center, 2008).
  • In the 2010 Nevada gubernatorial election, Rory Reid (D) won 65% of the Hispanic vote while Brian Sandoval (R) won 33%; Brian Sandoval became governor, capturing 62% of the White vote (Pew Hispanic Center, 2010).
  • Harry Reid (D) won the 2010 Nevada senatorial election, carrying 69% of the Hispanic vote, while Sharron Angle (R) only garnered 30% (Pew Hispanic Center, 2010).
