Top 10 Facts about Hispanics in Arizona
WASHINGTON, Feb. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On the eve of the Republican primary in Arizona, the Hispanic Leadership Network released its "Top 10 Facts about Hispanics in Arizona." In Tuesday's primary, 18% of all eligible voters in Arizona will be Latinos. Below are some additional facts about Hispanics in Arizona.
- Arizona's total Hispanic population is 1,895,149 or 29.6% of the state's population (U.S Census Bureau, 2010).
- Arizona has the fourth largest Hispanic population nationwide (Pew Hispanic Center, 2011).
- Arizona has 766,000 eligible Hispanic voters, which constitutes 18% of all eligible voters in the state (Pew Hispanic Center, 2011).
- Approximately 39% of Hispanics in Arizona are eligible to vote (Pew Hispanic Center).
- In Arizona, 79% of the White population is eligible to vote, whereas 39% of the Hispanic population is eligible to vote (Pew Hispanic Center).
- Arizona's unemployment rate stands at 8.7%; among Hispanics, the unemployment rate is even worse at 13.4% (U.S. Department of Labor).
- In the 2008 presidential election, President Barack Obama won 56% of the Hispanic vote versus John McCain's 41% share (Pew Hispanic Center, 2008).
- In the 2010 Arizona gubernatorial election, 71% of Hispanic voters supported Democrat Terry Goddard over Republican Governor Jan Brewer, who got 28% of the Hispanic vote (Pew Hispanic Center).
