Top 10 Facts about Hispanics in Arizona

WASHINGTON, Feb. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On the eve of the Republican primary in Arizona, the Hispanic Leadership Network released its "Top 10 Facts about Hispanics in Arizona."  In Tuesday's primary, 18% of all eligible voters in Arizona will be Latinos. Below are some additional facts about Hispanics in Arizona.  

• Arizona's total Hispanic population is 1,895,149 or 29.6% of the state's population (U.S Census Bureau, 2010).
• Arizona has the fourth largest Hispanic population nationwide (Pew Hispanic Center, 2011).
• Arizona has 766,000 eligible Hispanic voters, which constitutes 18% of all eligible voters in the state (Pew Hispanic Center, 2011).
• Approximately 39% of Hispanics in Arizona are eligible to vote (Pew Hispanic Center).
• In Arizona, 79% of the White population is eligible to vote, whereas 39% of the Hispanic population is eligible to vote (Pew Hispanic Center).
• Arizona's unemployment rate stands at 8.7%; among Hispanics, the unemployment rate is even worse at 13.4% (U.S. Department of Labor).
• In the 2008 presidential election, President Barack Obama won 56% of the Hispanic vote versus John McCain's 41% share (Pew Hispanic Center, 2008).
• In the 2010 Arizona gubernatorial election, 71% of Hispanic voters supported Democrat Terry Goddard over Republican Governor Jan Brewer, who got 28% of the Hispanic vote (Pew Hispanic Center).
• In the 2010 senatorial election, Hispanic voters favored Democrat Rodney Glassman (57%) over Republican John McCain (40%), who won the election (Pew Hispanic Center).
• Approximately 834,000 Hispanics live in poverty in Arizona. This number translates to 39% of the overall Hispanic population in the state (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010).
