Tonido Personal Cloud Network Adds 1 Million Devices
Self-Hosted Cloud Service Meets Demand for Private, Secure File Syncing and Sharing
AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- CodeLathe, the leader in personal cloud products and services, announced today that over 1 million devices were added to the Tonido Personal Cloud network. With 100 percent year-over-year growth and 1500 to 3000 devices added daily, Tonido's momentum demonstrates growing demand for personal cloud services that address the known security risks of file sharing and syncing on public clouds.
Launched in 2009, Tonido Desktop and Mobile allows users to access their files anywhere in the world by visiting a unique, password-protected URL that provides access to all the files on their personal computer. The self-hosted cloud solution allows users to view documents, play music, browse photos, watch videos and share files without ever sending personal data through unsecured mediums like email, social media platforms or storing in Public Online services.
As concerns over the security of public clouds are increasing, consumers are seeking safer alternatives. Tonido offers a compelling solution that fills this critical gap in the file syncing and sharing solution market. According to a 2012 Intel survey of more than 800 IT professionals, 28 percent had experienced a public cloud–related security breach. A 2013 Symantec survey of over 3,000 IT executives also found that more than 40 percent had lost data in the cloud and had to restore their information from backups, but 68 percent of these respondents saw recovery options fail.
Today, Tonido is the only personal cloud app to offer 2-way file synchronization without relying on public online services. Even log-in credentials are stored on the user's computer, rather than a Tonido controlled server.
"We are seeing a clear undercurrent where consumers, increasingly wary of security, trust and ownership of personal files in public cloud services, are looking for self-hosted alternatives," said Madhan Kanagavel, founder and CEO of CodeLathe. "Our growth momentum is clear evidence of that demand. Tonido has become the leading alternative to public cloud file sharing by bringing 100% private, secure file sharing to the general public. We will continue to expand our personal cloud capabilities and bring Tonido to more device platforms like Raspberry Pi, Chromecast and Smart TVs."
Accelerating broadband speeds have also been a driving force behind the appeal and performance of consumer private clouds. Today, local sync (2-way) using Tonido in the LAN is much faster than Dropbox and other popular public cloud file sync services. Additionally, Relay servers across 3 continents and 6 countries now provide an outstanding media streaming experience and seamless access to the personal cloud device.
"The self-hosted, personal cloud market is just starting to hit the growth curve and we see an expansive, largely untapped market for our personal cloud products and services in every home and business," said Anis Abdul, CTO of Codelathe. "As more cities start to offer gigabit broadband, many structural weaknesses of self-hosted personal clouds are disappearing. With current broadband capabilities available to homes and small business, nothing stops them running their own personal file or media server and sharing platforms. It is exciting to be in this market and to see our long, hard work in the personal cloud market addressing unmet needs."
Tonido is also the only cross-platform personal cloud application that is available on Windows, Mac and Linux as well as iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Windows 8 and Blackberry mobile operating systems. Tonido Personal Cloud solutions are currently white labeled by leading network-attached storage makers, and the Tonido team is currently in talks with major PC brands to add more devices.
