CORALVILLE, Iowa, July 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Tom Karagiannis, Ph.D., head of the McCord Research Laboratory at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, in Melbourne, Australia, has been awarded the Future Fellowships Funding grant by the Australian Research Council (ARC). This prestigious fellowship is granted to outstanding Australian and international researchers to promote research in areas of critical national and international importance.

The Australian Government declared the formation of the Future Fellowships in 2008, which is intended to attract and retain the best and brightest mid-career researchers to Australia. Australia anticipates enhancing its research capacity by supporting novel, internationally competitive research. The $700,000 fellowship will be awarded over a five-year period to Dr. Karagiannis.
Dr. Karagiannis has been awarded the funding for his innovative research in nanoparticle formulations for DNA-targeted radiotherapy and cancer imaging with an emphasis on cancer specific cell targeting techniques. Dr. Karagiannis hopes to therapeutically alter DNA structure with nanoparticles in order to increase the effectiveness of cancer therapy and improve the safety of imaging.
