Togo's Announces the 2015 National Sandwich Making Contest
70 nationwide Togo's crewmembers compete for cash prizes to find the "Fastest Sandwich Maker" in the U.S.
SAN JOSE, Calif., June 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Togo's Eateries, Inc., a "West Coast Original" since 1971, today announced the return of the National Sandwich Making Contest, a competition to find the fastest Togo's sandwich maker in the United States. Crewmembers from among the 255 Togo's restaurants have entered the contest.
Known for big, fresh and meaty sandwiches, Togo's takes pride in the quality of its food and the one-on-one, deli-style service. It is Togo's crewmembers who turn fresh artisan breads, premium, hand-sliced meats and freshly-scooped California avocados into the masterpieces that set Togo's apart from other sandwich shops. The National Sandwich Making Contest is all about honoring these Togo's crewmembers as they vie for the title of "Togo's Fastest Sandwich Maker."
The National Sandwich Making Contest follows a set of rules that reward competitors for speed and accuracy. Every contestant makes the same set of sandwiches, all made the "Togo's Way." After the clock starts, contestants are timed to see how quickly they can make, wrap and pack the sandwich and clean their stations.
The in-restaurant competitions took place between May 25th and June 7th. The winners of each competition, as judged by the franchisee or manager, go on to compete in the Regionals, held in California between June 27th and June 28th (details below). Over 100 sandwiches made during Regionals and as part of the event will be donated to local charities including Our Daily Bread in San Jose, Children's Hospital of Orange County, and Loaves and Fishes in Sacramento.
Three final contestants will compete in the Finals taking place Tuesday, September 1st, at the Togo's Annual Conference, held at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
"The National Sandwich Making Contest is all about taking pride in who we are and what we do at Togo's," said Jim Peros, Chief Operating Officer for Togo's. "Our crewmembers treat their work as a craft and wow our customers with their excellent guest service every single day. This is a chance to celebrate our team members who take the sandwich craft to an extraordinary level."
Medalists at each level of competition earn cash prizes and other rewards. 1st, 2nd and 3rd at Regionals win $150, $100 and $50 respectively. At the Finals, 1st wins $500 and a special award while 2nd and 3rd win $250 and $125.
The judging is strict and methodical. Each contestant is video taped and timed down to the hundredth of a second. Judges look for a total of 15 official errors that each come with a time penalty. For instance, a torn bag adds 3 seconds to the total time while the wrong number of pickles costs 2 seconds.

About Togo's Eateries, Inc.
Togo's was founded in 1971 by a young college student with a large appetite and little money looking to make sandwiches the way he liked them — big, fresh and meaty. Keeping in the spirit of the original, Togo's products are still made with only the highest quality ingredients; including fresh-baked Artisan breads, hand sliced premium pastrami, turkey and roast beef, as well as California avocados and cheeses. Togo's proprietary brand of old-fashioned Pastrami, 98 percent fat-free slow-roasted turkey, and Togo's homemade chicken and tuna salad set the brand apart from other sandwich shops. With more than 325 locations open and under development throughout the West, Togo's is a franchise-based business that offers online ordering and catering services.
