This year's festivities included the rollout of the new Red Velvet donut, the newest flavor to the world-renowned Entenmann's donut family with a larger-than-life, seven-foot donut replica made of foam and plastic and a special custom donut box. The oversized Red Velvet donut creation was built by Themendous.com, "The King of Huge." Visit the Entenmann's YouTube page to see how the giant donut was made. Entenmann's also presented a check for $30,000 to The Salvation Army in front of crowds of consumers at the celebration that was hosted by Mr. Rich Frosted and Mrs. Crumb, two of Entenmann's popular donuts. With this year's donation, the four-year partnership hit the $100,000 mark. The day's activities included free Entenmann's donuts and coffee, thanks to The Salvation Army. Consumers also had a chance to spin the Donut Day prize wheels to win free Entenmann's sunglasses, backpacks and more.
The holiday, which is held annually on the first Friday of June, was established by The Salvation Army in 1938 in Chicago. The intention was to honor the "Donut Lassies" who served the treats to soldiers during World War I and to help raise funds necessary during the Great Depression. This occasion solidified the donut as a permanent symbol of the services The Salvation Army continues to provide.
Entenmann's works hard to keep up with the demands of Entenmann's lovers nationwide, utilizing donut factories in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and Montebello, California to produce over 780 million donuts each year.
