PORTLAND, Ore., June 27, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- As Americans gear up for events surrounding the Fourth of July, TNT Fireworks – the nation's largest distributor of consumer fireworks and sparklers – urges families and individuals to practice safety when celebrating our nation's independence.
"As we commemorate this national holiday with fireworks and sparklers, it's important to keep safety top of mind," says Jerry Farley, spokesperson for TNT.
In keeping with rules of safety outlined by the American Pyrotechnics Association, TNT urges fireworks consumers to:
- Keep a working garden hose and/or bucket of water nearby in case of emergencies
- Only use consumer fireworks and sparklers away from homes, buildings and dry grass – on a flat, level, hard, fireproof surface, such as concrete, that is free from debris
- Use water to dampen the surface area
- When finished, allow used fireworks and sparklers to stand for at least 20 minutes, submerge in water, drain, place in a plastic bag and dispose outside in a covered trash can
- Light only one firework or sparkler at a time
- Always have a sober adult in charge
- NEVER give fireworks or sparklers to young children
- Only buy legal fireworks and sparklers from a licensed seller
- Read and follow the directions on the labels
- NEVER carry a firework in your pocket or hold a lit firework in your hand
- NEVER shoot fireworks from a metal or glass container
- Keep spectators at a safe distance
- Always wear safety glasses when igniting fireworks or sparklers
- Don't aim or throw fireworks at another person
- NEVER place any part of your body directly over a firework or sparkling device – even when lighting
- NEVER approach or try to re-ignite a firework or sparkler that doesn't light the first time
- PROTECT YOUR PETS. Animals are often frightened by the sounds of fireworks. Protect your "best friends" by keeping them indoors, secure and away from the loud, sudden noises
Individuals should check local and state laws and only purchase fireworks and sparklers that are legally permitted. Also, people are encouraged to check the label and instructions on both fireworks and sparklers to ensure they come from a reliable, legal and licensed source.
