TNECD Commissioner Boyd tours new Ficosa Facility with 47 local Students
Global automotive manufacturing company celebrated Tennessee's manufacturing week with Commissioner Boyd and local students.
DETROIT, Oct. 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- To celebrate manufacturing week, Tennessee Economic and Community Development Commissioner Randy Boyd visited the new Ficosa North America plant in Cookeville, Tennessee, with 47 local students this week.
In an effort to put a spotlight on career opportunities in the manufacturing industry, students from Putnam, White and Warren Counties toured the 270,000 square foot auto-parts facility on Wednesday, Oct. 5, and got a first-hand look at what modern manufacturing jobs look like. The recently-built plant will have its official grand opening event later this month, Oct. 28, 2016.
"With manufacturing you can see the actual product that you are developing," said Antonio Ibanez, COO of Ficosa North America. "You are creating an asset that you can see and touch and it is very rewarding. By starting your career with a multi-national company like Ficosa, you can work yourself up through the ranks and have a lot of opportunities."
The new Ficosa plant, which will produce rear view systems for various automotive OEMs including Nissan, Ford, Volkswagen, Fiat Chrysler and General Motors, will increase production capacity and help provide much needed manufacturing jobs in the U.S. and Tennessee.
"Tennessee is a big manufacturing state," Boyd said. "One-in-eight Tennesseans with a job works in manufacturing. While many other states are celebrating national manufacturing day, we've decided to celebrate Tennessee manufacturers for an entire week because this is the best place in America for manufacturing. We've be coordinating plant visits with students to let young people know about the high quality and high paying manufacturing jobs that are in very high demand. But students also need to get the necessary skills and education for these jobs. The great news is that because of Governor Haslam's Tennessee Promise, those skills can be earned for free at an applied technology or community college."
To help fill new positions that are currently available at the new plant, Ficosa North America is working with AtWork Group, KellyOCG®, Manpower, ResourceMFG and Wise Staffing Group.
