TMA Northeast and Northern California Chapters Will Receive Top Honors at New York Conference
CHICAGO, March 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Two TMA Chapters chosen to receive top honors demonstrate that restructuring pros also know how to make the proper adjustments to create rewarding experiences for TMA volunteers.
Turnaround Management Association, the premier nonprofit association dedicated to turnaround management and corporate renewal, began recognizing outstanding TMA chapters in 1993. The chapters, which now number 46, provide educational and networking programs benefiting members and touch local communities through pro bono, civic and philanthropic projects.
The Northeast and Northern California Chapters will be honored at the TMA Spring Conference, April 20–22, at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers in New York, www.turnaround.org/Events/Calendar.aspx?objectId=11071.
2009 Chapter of the Year
The 544-member TMA Northeast Chapter sailed ahead of 45 chapters to reach its membership goal first in spite of economic headwinds that constrained spending by lenders.
Chapter leaders re-engaged lapsed members, enlisted board members to help recruit new members, and organized educational programs targeting workout lenders since many financially-strapped banks have curtailed in-house training. The chapter initiated a networking group for women members, known as The WIRE (Women in Restructuring), and held its first career development program for Harvard Business School students.
Despite the recession, the chapter donated even more to its charities in 2009 than in 2008. Its Ninth Annual Charity Golf Outing raised $40,000 – a $5,000 increase - for schools in Boston and Providence and a women's shelter in Cambridge. Members also began assisting the Massachusetts Horticultural Society with restructuring its finances.
2009 Most Improved Chapter of the Year
The 189-member TMA Northern California Chapter is preparing for a predicted surge in Baby Boomer retirements by finding fresh faces now. Its Next Generation Leadership subcommittee hosts a LinkedIn group online and plans to offer career advice.
The chapter also boosted membership by offering member-only discounts to attend programs and embellishing its membership drive with a catchy slogan. Eight programs, three more than in 2008, were held, and they covered such topics as alternative financing and Washington's and Wall Street's roles in the financial crisis. For the first time the chapter held programs in Sacramento and San Jose.
Chicago-based TMA, www.turnaround.org, has more than 9,000 members that include turnaround practitioners, attorneys, accountants, investors, lenders, venture capitalists, appraisers, liquidators, executive recruiters and consultants.
