Titan America's Pennsuco Complex Recognized by Wildlife Habitat Council
MEDLEY, Fla., Nov. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Employees at Titan America LLC's Pennsuco Complex received international recognition for their contributions to conservation education at the Wildlife Habitat Council's (WHC) 25th Annual Symposium, Celebrating Corporate Conservation, held in Baltimore, MD earlier this month. Titan America, LLC demonstrated its continued commitment to environmental stewardship by achieving Corporate Lands for Learning certification at the Pennsuco Complex.
"Titan America, LLC is being recognized as an industry leader in corporate conservation," says Margaret O'Gorman, WHC president. "The company is a model for how we at the Wildlife Habitat Council connect corporations and communities to create habitat and increase biodiversity on corporate properties for the benefit of all." Through its certification programs of private lands owned by the corporate sector, WHC has set the standard for conservation programs on privately held land for more than 25 years.
The Pennsuco Complex was one of the programs recognized at the 2013 Symposium as meeting the strict certification requirements of "Corporate Lands for Learning." The WHC's Corporate Wildlife Habitat Certification/International Accreditation Program recognizes commendable wildlife habitat management and environmental education programs at individual sites. Certification criteria are stringent.
Candidates must document that programs have been active for at least one year with a management plan that lists goals, objectives and prescriptions. "Conservation education efforts begin with our employees, who regularly participate in wildlife habitat enhancement projects such as the planting of native trees," says Muhammad Khan, Area Manager of Cement Manufacturing, Shipping & Environmental for the Pennsuco Complex. "Environmental education is also an essential component of safety training, during which employees are taught the importance of wetlands habitat, the proper handling of environmental waste, air and water pollution mitigation efforts at the site."
Conservation education is also shared with the local community. Site tours are offered to high school and college students where they have an opportunity to view the littoral shelf and wading birds area of the Pennsuco campus. During the tours, students learn about the operation's water and air quality monitoring programs and the significance of these factors in promoting a suitable habitat for native flora and fauna. When groups are unable to visit the site in-person, the "Corporate Lands for Learning" team often conducts off-site presentations, informing attendees of the Pennsuco Complex's efforts in meeting sustainability goals.
"The Corporate Lands for Learning Program has given us the opportunity to involve not just the employees, but the community in our conservation efforts," says George Pantazopoulos, Vice President of Cement, Pozzolans and Aggregate, Titan Florida. "It is our responsibility to maintain harmony with the environment at the Pennsuco campus."
The Wildlife Habitat Council is a nonprofit, non-lobbying organization dedicated to increasing the quality and amount of wildlife habitat on corporate, private and public lands. WHC devotes its resources to building partnerships with corporations and conservation groups to create solutions that balance the demands of economic growth with the requirements of a healthy, bio diverse and sustainable environment. WHC-assisted wildlife habitat and conservation education programs are found in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and 11 other countries. To learn more, visit www.wildlifehc.org.
