NEW YORK, March 16, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- TipRanks, the world's leading analyst ranking service, has identified the top 10 Wall Street analysts of 2016.
The ranking was based on the analysts' ability to generate return with their stock ratings and price targets. Each rating made during 2016 was measured over a time-frame of 3 months.
TipRanks discovered that two key market sectors dominated the top 10 list: basic materials and financial. Half of the top 10 analysts of last year specialized in basic materials, with financial analysts in 3 of the top 10 places. Just one analyst from the tech sector (David Hynes) and one from the healthcare sector (Michael Matson) made it onto the list while analysts from several sectors did not feature at all.
Canaccord Genuity, a Canadian-based investment bank and financial services company, is the only bank to be represented by more than one analyst with Sam Burwell, Stephen Berman and David Hynes in 1st, 4th and 9th place respectively.
CEO of TipRanks, Uri Gruenbaum, commented, "While we are not an analyst endorsement platform, we are always excited to see those that generate excess returns and feel obligated to highlight them. Clearly, 2016 was the year of the smaller research firms as most of the top performing analysts came from private research firms."
The top 10 analysts of 2016 are:
- Sam Burwell of Canaccord Genuity, basic materials: the number 1 analyst of 2016, Burwell had a 93% success rate and a 20.3% average return per recommendation.
