Time to Put Garry McCarthy Out of Chicago's Misery Says Illinois State Rifle Association
SPRINGFIELD, Ill., July 6, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following was released today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):
In mid-June, "Crain's Chicago Business" called for the ouster of Garry McCarthy from his job as Chicago's Police Superintendent. The business magazine cited McCarthy's inability during his four-year tenure to gain even the slightest advantage over those who cultivate the city's criminal culture.
The ISRA beat Crain's to the punch by almost 3 years. It was clear early on that McCarthy was more focused on enforcing Mayor Emanuel's political agenda than he was enforcing the laws designed to protect the good people of Chicago. McCarthy's concealing of "flash mob" violence on the Magnificent Mile and his warning to firearm carry permittees that his officers would shoot first, ask questions later, were sins grave enough in the ISRA's eyes to demand McCarthy's removal years ago. Of course, that didn't happen and the McCarthy charade has played on.
The lawlessness that occurred on Chicago streets this weekend stands as yet another indictment of McCarthy and the incompetence he has shown in the discharge of his duties. The ISRA doesn't expect Mayor Emanuel to pay attention to anything that the Association says, but he should at least pay attention to the advice of Crain's.
"McCarthy's ineptitude has made Chicago a national laughing stock," commented ISRA Executive Director, Richard Pearson. "People everywhere were wagering on just how high the body count would rise in the city this weekend."
"The behavior of certain individuals in the city was certainly pathetic," continued Pearson. "But their criminal antics were nowhere near as pathetic as McCarthy's excuse for his impotence. It came of no surprise to me that McCarthy went before the press and blamed the violence in Chicago streets on law-abiding firearm owners living in the suburbs. This familiar refrain from McCarthy doesn't get any less libelous no matter how many times McCarthy utters it."
"Mayor Emanuel is a fairly astute individual," said Pearson. "Emanuel is well past the stage of saving face thanks to McCarthy's ineptitude. Therefore, it would be no skin off his political nose if he gave McCarthy the boot right now. If for no other reason, Emanuel should get rid of McCarthy for the sake of those left standing after this-weekend's crime spree."
The ISRA is the state's leading advocate of safe, lawful and responsible firearms ownership. For more than a century, the ISRA has represented the interests of millions of law-abiding Illinois firearm owners.
