At Timberline Knolls, art therapy is used to help in the recovery of women and adolescent girls who are struggling with eating disorders, trauma, addiction and other related issues. Art therapy allows for expression without using the spoken word; it helps with processing emotions and allows individuals to sometimes see something about themselves they didn't know existed.
"I treasure the opportunity to support our residents in creating something brave, truthful and meaningful," said Brittlyn Riley, LPC, ATR, art therapist at Timberline Knolls. "It's a profound experience to witness the creation of something that often times, has never been shared. These artists are wonderfully courageous."
Honesty is the first step in the 12-step Principles of Recovery, which is one of treatment approaches used by Timberline Knolls.
The Lemont Center for the Arts serves as the Art & Culture Commission headquarters and provides classes and workshops to all residents of Lemont and the surrounding area. The Center also presents exhibits by local artists and art groups.
"This particular exhibit is always very well received in the community," said Mona Parry, chairperson at the Art & Culture Commission and artistic director of the Lemont Center for the Arts. "It's sensitive, thought provoking and even startling at times. We support all the efforts of Timberline Knolls as an integral member of our community, especially their mission to promote healing through art."
