DALLAS, Dec. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments employees, retirees and the Texas Instruments Foundation contributed a total of $440,152 for the American Red Cross Typhoon Appeal to help fund disaster relief efforts in the wake of the massive typhoon that struck the Philippines last month.
That figure includes a dollar-for-dollar match by the Texas Instruments (TI) Foundation of $170,000 in employee and retiree donations collected worldwide as well as a $100,000 contribution from the TI Foundation immediately after the disaster occurred.
"Thanks to the generosity of Texas Instruments, the Red Cross is able to provide critical support to Typhoon Haiyan survivors in the Philippines now and as they rebuild and recover," said Neal Litvack, chief development officer at the American Red Cross.
Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines last month, resulting in thousands of deaths in central Philippines, with more than 650,000 people displaced. An international appeal was issued by the Philippines government and a Typhoon Appeal was established by the American Red Cross. TI set up a dedicated microsite to make online donations by employees and retirees easy to track and match.
"The generous gifts from TI employees and retirees around the world express our genuine compassion for the people of the Philippines," said Andy Smith, TI director of corporate philanthropy. "The matching gift from the TI Foundation was a tremendous way to augment the outpouring of support for a country where our fellow TI employees and their families live and work."
TI was among the companies leading efforts to raise support, although TI facilities and employees in the Philippines were not affected. TI is the largest exporter in the Philippines and has had a longtime presence there as a multinational semiconductor company. TI Philippines (TIPI) has been in operation in Baguio since 1980 and in Clark, Pampanga, since 2007.
