SAN FRANCISCO and NAPA, Calif., Jan. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Bank of the West and Fruition Sciences have announced three finalists for the 2014 Vintage Report Innovation Award Presented by Bank of the West. The award recognizes the most groundbreaking method, practice or sustainable approach used during the 2014 vintage.
This year's finalists are Monica Cooper, UC Cooperative Extension Farm Advisor; E. & J. Gallo, and Ridge Vineyards. Monica Cooper examined the effectiveness of regional grower groups and remote mapping strategies to monitor and manage grapevine leafroll-associated viruses. E. & J. Gallo experimented with a variable rate irrigation system prototype to assess vineyard variability and water use efficiency. Ridge Vineyard used sequential petiole sampling and berry analysis to evaluate two rootstocks from the same ranch to determine which consistently generates a higher quality wine. The winner will be announced at the 2014 Vintage Report Conference on January 20, 2015 in Napa.
The judges panel met on December 16 at the offices of Bank of the West's Premium Wine Group in Napa to review submissions and select this year's finalists. Like last year, the judges included acclaimed industry experts and leaders in the field:
- Paul Goldberg (Vineyard Manager, Bettinelli Vineyards)
- Professor James A. Kennedy (Professor and Chair, Department of Viticulture and Enology, California State University, Fresno)
- Curtis Phillips (Senior Editor, Wine Business Monthly)
- Aaron Pott (Winemaker, Pott Wine)
- Jennifer Putnam (Executive Director and CEO, Napa Valley Grapegrowers)
"In the Premium Wine Group, we are fortunate to work with many of the organizations and individuals at the forefront of the wine industry. We are excited to partner with Fruition Sciences to help raise the profile of industry innovators and spread the word about the creative experiments that will shape the future of wine-making," said Managing Director Adam Beak, head of the Premium Wine Group.
Each year, Fruition Sciences organizes the Vintage Report Conference, an exclusive event that brings together winemakers, viticulturists and scientists to discuss the latest innovations and advances in viticulture and enology. In doing so, the Vintage Report provides a venue for bringing new ideas to the forefront and improving the industry as a whole. Now in its second year, the Vintage Report Innovation Award Presented by Bank of the West focuses on approaches and techniques used during the 2014 vintage (though they may have started earlier) that are either being used in or are exportable to Napa terroirs.
